Sean Burke writes stories that question inherited narratives—personal, historical, and institutional—to reveal the human truths that survive them.

Stories are how we remember. Drama is how we argue with memory.

Sean Burke writes for film, television, and the stage. His work explores the intersection of history, family, justice, and institutional power, where competing narratives shape identity, loyalty, and consequence. Rather than offering simple answers, his stories examine how memory influences the lives people inherit—and the choices that define them.

His work has been produced in New York City, at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and in Germany. Full-length plays include Cowboys Abroad: A Hobbyhorse Opera, Belfast, City Seas, Strike of '92, and The History of John F. Kennedy, Part I. He has also written numerous one-act plays, including a cycle of Grand Guignol adaptations, as well as original work in noir and Shakespeare adaptation.

As co-founder and Artistic Director of Aboutface Theatre Company, Sean developed and produced new work while mentoring emerging playwrights through weekly dramaturgy workshops. He later co-founded Post Road magazine, helping establish it as an independent literary journal for fiction, essays, poetry, and criticism.

Sean Burke Studios is the home for his original dramatic work across stage and screen.

Whether writing for theater or film, Sean is drawn to stories where institutions falter, memory deceives, and individuals must choose between justice, loyalty, and survival. His work asks not what is true, but how truth survives when the systems designed to protect it begin to fracture.

The goal is not to provide answers, but to illuminate the deeper truths that emerge when certainty gives way to complexity.
